Gift of Light Project
In a concerted effort to improve the quality of life of children and families who do not have access to electricity, Roshan is collaborating with
d.light to replace kerosene lamps in households across Afghanistan with durable, solar powered lanterns through the Gift of Light Project.
Shedding Light On The Situation
Electricity is a resource that many low-income households in Afghanistan are unable to access, particularly those living outside main city areas. In most parts of the country, the severe lack of infrastructure means that local communities must rely on dangerous kerosene lamps as a source of light.
Poor light can hinder a child's ability to study effectively, and limit a family's income generating potential. In addition to being a health risk, kerosene lamps are costly and fail to meet daily household needs, such as cooking, cleaning and working.
Giving The Gift Of Light
The word Roshan means "light" and "hope" in both of the country's national languages, Dari and Pashto. In line with our name, we spearheaded a program to light up the lives of all Afghans, both young and old, throughout the country.
Through the Gift of Light Project, we aim to provide Afghan families with solar powered lanterns – a brighter, safer and more cost effective alternative source of light. The lanterns are distributed to children through participating charities. The benefits extend to the household, by providing sufficient lighting to help children study better at night and facilitating an improved quality of life for the entire family.
