M-Paisa Customer Tariffs

It’s is an innovative mobile payment solution ideal for people who don’t have a bank account. You can fill your M-Paisa account with money and it will be held safely in a bank account run by M-Paisa on your behalf. You don’t need to have contact with the bank and they won’t even have your details. Some of the benefits of having this service are highlighted below.

With M-Paisa you can:

  • Deposit Cash: put money into an M-Paisa account
  • Withdraw Cash: take money out of an M-Paisa account
  • Send and Receive Money: send money to family, friends or business partners and receive money from the mentioned parties.
  • Receive and Repay Loans: you can receive and repay a loan from FMFB (The First Micro Finance Bank) For clients of participating microfinance institutions.
  • Buy Airtime: refill prepaid airtime or purchase Roshan credit.
  • Receive Salaries: you can receive your salary if you are an employee of participating companies.

There is no need to have a bank account, no minimum balance and no monthly fee required to transfer money with M-Paisa.

Is M-Paisa safe to use?
Yes, your M-Paisa secret PIN protects the money in your account – do not share your PIN with anyone. If you loose your SIM, call Roshan Customer Care (313) for assistance.

What do I need to register for M-Paisa?

  • Roshan SIM
  • Valid National ID or Passport
  • Passport size photograph
  • Must be 18 years or older

Register for M-Paisa:
Go to an M-Paisa Agent (participating Roshan airtime dealer) and:

  1. Upgrade your SIM for free if necessary
  2. Complete the registration forms and accept the M-Paisa Terms and Conditions
  3. The agent will register you in the system and you will receive a start key on your handset
  4. Activate the M-Paisa menu using your phone and the start key you received
  5. You will receive a secret word on your handset. This will be required when you call Customer Care (313)

Activate your M-Paisa Account:

  1. The M-Paisa menu can be found by selecting “SIM Services” from your menu
  2. Select “M-Paisa” and then “Activate”
  3. Enter your start key and create a new secret PIN number
  4. When asked to enter ID, enter your NID number or date of birth and wait for a confirmation message

Activation is Free of charge.

Change Your Secret Word: 

  1. Select “My Account” then “Secret Word” from the M-Paisa menu
  2. Enter a “New Secret Word” and your PIN
  3. You will receive an SMS confirming that your secret word has been changed

How do I deposit and withdraw money?

1. Deposit Cash:
Go to an M-Paisa Agent (participating Roshan airtime dealer) and:

  • Give your phone number to the agent and tell the agent how much you want to put in your account
  • The agent will use his handset and do the transaction
  •  You and the agent will receive an SMS confirming the transaction (e.g. the money has been deposited in your account)
  • Give the money to the agent 

2. Withdraw Cash:
Go to an M-Paisa Agent (participating Roshan airtime dealer) and:

  • Select withdraw cash from M-Paisa menu
  • Enter Agent number, Amount you want to withdraw from your account and your secret PIN
  • You and the M-Paisa Agent will receive a confirmation message that the transaction has been completed
  • The Agent will give you the cash

If you can’t use M-Paisa menu you can make transactions through IVR by calling (111) and the system will guide you through in Dari, Pashto and English.

How do I send money?

You can send money to a registered or an unregistered M-Paisa customer:

  • Go to the "Roshan" menu and select "M-Paisa"
  • Select "Send Money"
  • Enter the mobile phone number of the person you want to send money to
  • Enter the amount you want to send
  • Enter your secret PIN
  • Confirm the contents of the message displayed "Send Money to 0799xxxxxx Afs 1000" and then press OK
  • You and recipient will receive a confirmation SMS

How can my family receive money without an M-Paisa account?

An unregistered M-Paisa customer can withdraw money sent to them by an M-Paisa customer by doing the following:

  • Advice your relative or friend, who is an unregistered M-Paisa customer that you are sending money to them through M-Paisa. They will receive an SMS notification of the transaction
  • To be able to withdraw the money sent, advise the recipient to go to a registered M-Paisa agent near them and show the SMS notification to the shop assistant. The recipient must have the SIM which has received the SMS and the money can not be withdrawn through any other SIM
  • Using the code contained in the confirmation SMS and the recipient’s phone number the Agent will confirm the details with M-Paisa
  • M-Paisa will advise the Agent to give cash to the recipient

How do I buy airtime?

An M-Paisa customer will be able to buy airtime for its phone or another phone. From the M-Paisa menu:

  • Enter the mobile number if you wish to buy airtime for another phone
  • Key in the amount of airtime you wish to purchase
  • Enter your secret PIN
  • Confirm the details entered as displayed on the screen e.g. "Buy airtime 0799xxxxxx Afs120" by pressing ok
  • You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-Paisa
