Roshan Brings Home to Afghanistan Three Prestigious Stevie International Business Awards

November 10, 2013 (Kabul, Afghanistan) – Roshan, Afghanistan's leading total communications provider, today announced it received three awards at the Tenth Annual International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain. More than 3300 entries from organizations and individuals across the world vied for the prestigious “Stevie” awards.

Roshan was awarded the Bronze Stevie for ‘Most Innovative Company of the Year in the Middle East and Africa’ for the telecommunications category. Roshan Community, Roshan’s corporate social responsibility arm, received the Bronze Stevie for ‘CSR Program of the Year in the Middle East and Africa.’ A Bronze Stevie was also awarded to Roshan’s Customer Care Division in the category of ‘Customer Service Department of the Year’ for the telecommunications industry.    

“These three awards are recognition for all of the hard work and dedication of Roshan’s 1100 employees and reflects our company values of not only commercial success but also an ongoing commitment to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and advancement,” said Chief Executive Officer Karim Khoja. “In 2003, we came into Afghanistan when next to no one else was willing to invest, and have since strived to build a world-class company for Afghans, that also makes a significant social impact. It is truly an honor to be recognized by the international community for leading innovation and quality of service in Afghanistan,” Khoja added. 

In 2003, when Roshan commenced operations in Afghanistan, the company had a vision to use technology and innovation to improve the lives of Afghans. As part of that vision, Roshan has consistently upgraded its state-of-the-art network, and most recently Roshan launched its 3G Jahaan service (meaning "the world") – allowing customers to access features such as web browsing, video calling, apps, conferencing and streaming media, and marking a significant milestone in delivering the latest in telecommunications access to all Afghans. The service was initially launched in Kabul, Herat and Kandahar in early 2013, and has been recently expanded to Mazar, Kunduz and Jalalabad. Khoja believes the launch and expansion of 3G Jahaan to be “a crucial step in Roshan’s vision, and a massive leap forward for Afghans who previously had little or no access to the internet."

Roshan’s investment in 3G technology is also part of the company’s continued mission to leverage telecommunications to bridge critical infrastructure gaps, investing nearly $600 million in fields such as health and financial inclusion across the country. In 2013, Roshan expanded its Telemedicine Project to connect two additional hospitals to its network of hospitals in Afghanistan and Pakistan, thereby increasing delivery of world-class medical care to the most remote regions of Afghanistan. Additionally, with the introduction of its mobile money service, M-Paisa, Roshan created a product that provides the 97% of Afghans who are unbanked with access to safe, secure and convenient financial services in even the most rural, isolated regions. Currently, approximately $6 million in salary payments are made monthly through M-Paisa, including those of the Afghan National Police.

A robust social responsibility program has always been a vital aspect of Roshan’s commitment to Afghanistan’s long-term, sustainable development.  Roshan’s Corporate Social Responsibility arm, Roshan Community, has:

  • Served approximately 500,000 meals each year, through a partnership with Afghan NGO Aschiana;
  • Constructed 26 playgrounds for the children in Afghanistan;
  • Installed 32 solar powered e-learning centers in rural villages;
  • Constructed 155 wells across Afghanistan for clean drinking water; and
  • Built 10 schools in partnership with Save the Children.
