March 19, 2013 (Kabul, Afghanistan) – Roshan, Afghanistan’s leading total communications provider, has been recognized by international nonprofit, B Lab, for its positive overall social and environmental impact with the release of the third annual “B Corp Best for the World” list. In 2013, Roshan became the first Afghan company to be certified as a B Corporation and is the only one in Afghanistan to date.
“These honors underscore Roshan’s founding principle of social responsibility, our commitment to training the next generation of Afghan leaders, and our ongoing mission for the socio-economic redevelopment of Afghanistan,” said Karim Khoja, Roshan’s Chief Executive Officer. “Since beginning operations in 2003, we have strived to provide world-class professional growth opportunities for Afghans, and to continually invest in the rebuilding of the communities in which we operate. This now also includes initiatives to improve the energy efficiency of our towers and install solar power to lessen our environmental impact. We are proud that our efforts to enhance the lives of millions of people throughout the country have been recognized by the international community.”
Roshan’s investment in communities is part of the company’s continued mission to leverage telecommunications to bridge critical infrastructure gaps, investing in fields such as health and financial inclusion, and programs for children, women and communities to build human potential and capacity across the country. “Study after study shows that being ‘best for workers’ means being best for shareholders because the name of the game is securing the best talent. Businesses that can also improve the quality of life in the communities around them will be the ones that attract that talent, and turn their customers into evangelists”, said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab, the nonprofit organization that certifies B Corporations. “The B Corp Best for Workers honorees are the companies people want to work for and invest in because they’ve proven they’re the best of the best by meeting rigorous, comprehensive third party standards people can trust.”
