Season Two of the Roshan Afghan Premier League Kicks Off

August 21, 2013 (Kabul, Afghanistan) – The Afghan Football Federation (AFF), Roshan, Afghanistan’s leading total communications provider, and Moby Group, the country’s largest media company, today announced the launch of the second season of the Roshan Afghan Premier League (RAPL).  The eight teams comprising the RAPL: Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat, Badakhshan, Kandahar, Jalalabad, Khost and Panshjir, will play a series of 18 matches starting on August 22 that will culminate in a final championship match on October 11.  All matches will take place in Kabul’s newly renovated AFF Stadium.

 

“The 2013 RAPL season will build on the success of last year’s inaugural season, which united communities through football, attracted more youths to the game, and revealed new players of national team caliber,” said Kiramuddin Karim, President of the Afghanistan Football Federation.  “The RAPL will continue to build the capacity of the AFF and earn the attention of the international community regarding the importance of funding sports.”

As seen on the reality television series Maidan-e-Sabz (Green Field), the RAPL teams feature young men selected through a series of eight regional tournaments in which up to six teams from different provinces competed against one another with coaches and former players from Afghanistan’s national team judging the players’ performances.  The 2013 RAPL teams are composed of players from the national team as well as players never before seen on a national stage. 

 

Commenting on the unprecedented nature of the RAPL and its importance for Afghanistan, Shafic Gawhari, RAPL Co-Commissioner, said, “The selection process for the 2013 RAPL teams was a unique success.  We reached out to nearly every football player across the country and managed to introduce the best of them to the eight RAPL teams.  I am sure that the 2013 tournament will be one of the biggest events the country has ever seen.  It will bring joy and inspiration to Afghans both inside and outside the country, as well as make the younger generation hopeful about a bright future for the country.”

 

The league is fully supported by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and all playing rules and regulations are in accordance with those set forth by FIFA and AFC.  The matches will be broadcast on Moby’s TOLO TV, the most popular television channel in the country, as well as on Lemar TV, Afghanistan's top Pashto channel.  The matches will also be aired on radio stationsman FM and Arakozia FM, and streamed live to a worldwide audience on the RAPL YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/afghanpremierleague.

Roshan Afghan Premier League 2013 is owned by the Afghanistan Football Federation.
